Red Ragtop reminds me of him
The contents of my past
A shakily written letter
A sealed envelope
I’ve burned in my mind
But when that song plays
I resent who I was
And who I would have become
Had I kept holding on
Instead of burning my past
And blazing a new trail to my future
The damage that remains is negligible
I forget it’s even there
Until I hear the sad notes of the song start
And it rises to the surface
Lighting a fire in my chest
The ashes of the letter turning to embers once again.

It's quite common to post late :)
I think there must be something about Tim McGraw songs that always bring back a memory of a past love.
Cursed songs, always digging up things that should remain buried.
I like the ashes to embers line best. I've never heard it put that way.
